If you speak English, live in the Nyon area and you’re pregnant or have just had a baby, then you should know that there is a qualified and fully registered English midwife working on your door step!

Since she started her practice in January last year, Louise Colassis has looked after more than 120 women, and the numbers keep growing! There is clearly a huge demand for high quality community midwifery services in the region, especially when they are provided in English.

Louise told knowitall.ch, “At the moment, I am one of only two English midwives in the Nyon district, so I try, with my colleague, to cover the needs of the English-speaking women in the area - not only English as a mother tongue, but as a second, or family language, for women who don't speak French. I offer pre- and post-natal care for women, including preparation courses for groups, or private one-on-one courses in the patient’s home.”

10% discount for knowitall.ch readers!

A local speech therapist, Christine Breede-Schechter, has set up a series of discussion groups in Geneva for parents of children with developmental issues.

Held on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays throughout the academic year, the S.P.E.A.K. (Strengthening Parents Efforts and Kids) Parent Discussion Groups have been designed to offer much needed support to parents who are feeling overwhelmed by the challenge of raising a child with developmental difficulties such as language delay, learning difficulty, social problems, stuttering or dyslexia.

Through a combination of lecture, reflective discussion, exercises, and readings parents will have an opportunity to:

  • Increase knowledge, gain confidence
  • Develop coping and problem solving skills
  • Discuss effective parenting strategies
  • Find practical and emotional support within the group and beyond

Not only will parents be able to express their individual concerns, they will also receive feedback and exchange ideas with other parents. As a licensed Speech-Language Pathologist, with over 15 years of experience working with parents and children, Christine will also offer her expertise and guidance.

aps74 dog

First day of boarding free for knowitall.ch readers' pets!

We’ve just got a new puppy at our house and have entered a whole new doggy world that I never new existed. No longer do I spend hours talking about the children with my friends; instead, I am constantly calling them up for recommendations on veterinarians, dog trainers, toilet training, and kennels, indeed anything to do with dogs!

Needless-to-day, we bought our puppy just before Christmas, after we had already arranged to go away on a family holiday in England, and when we called up the local kennels, they were all full!  It was very soon clear to us that there is a shortage of good quality kennels for both cats and dogs, and owners will travel for miles to make sure that their pets get the best possible care whilst they are away.

So we were very interested to receive a recommendation recently at Know-it-all passport for a kennel service in Cranves-Sales, just outside Geneva, which appears to meet all our requirements… and more!

Set up in 1998 by Alain Sarrouy, Animaux Passion Services (APS74) provides kennels for both dogs and cats as well rodents and birds. Ideally situated in a modern and comfortable location in the countryside with lots of green space for your animals, APS74 offers guaranteed outings for your pets every day they are staying at the kennels – something we discovered during our own research is not a standard option in all kennels. Daily petting is a standard service for all pets that have come to expect love and attention in the home, as well as top quality food. It is possible to book for a day, weekend or longer holiday period at the kennel - all the usual rules apply re: vaccinations etc.

Asked how he got into the kennel business, Alain told knowitall.ch, “Having worked in various commercial jobs at the beginning of my career, I soon realised that my passion for animals was too great to resist. So after working at the animal refuge, Arthaz, in 1993, I decided to set up the first home delivery service for dog food in the region.  One thing led to another and, before I knew it, I was opening my own kennels and training center for dogs in 1998. With the expansion of his business, Alain now employs a boarding assistant, called Marjorie, who is a dog and horse breeder, and equally passionate about animals!
