Moving to the Lake Geneva region comes with plenty of administrative milestones from registration at your local Office de la population to setting up mandatory health insurance (LAMal / KVG). But one of the most stressful situations for newly-arrived expats, international civil servants, and their families is falling ill before having a designated family doctor (médecin traitant).

If you call a standard medical practice, you will often find that their patient lists are full, or that the next routine intake appointment is 4 to 6 weeks away.

Fortunately, both Canton Geneva and Canton Vaud feature an established network of walk-in outpatient medical centers universally known throughout Romandie as Permanences. These centers bridge the gap between private doctor practices and hospital emergency rooms (urgences), offering same-day, English-speaking care without an appointment, 365 days a year.

Here is your practical field guide to navigating walk-in healthcare across Geneva, Nyon, and Lausanne.

4. SWISS HEALTH INSURANCE, BILLING AND THE TELMED RULE
Many newly arrived expats assume that walk-in clinics operate like expensive private hospitals. In Switzerland, this is not the case:

1. Standard LAMal Statutory Coverage: Consultations at walk-in permanences are statutory outpatient medical services billed under official federal TARMED tariffs. They are 100% covered by mandatory Swiss basic health insurance (LAMal), subject to your annual franchise (deductible) and standard 10% copay (quote-part).
2. International Plans (UNSMIS, Cigna, Allianz, Bupa): Permanences are accustomed to international documentation. You will typically settle the bill by card on-site and receive an itemized official invoice (Feuille de soins / justificatif de remboursement) to submit directly to your international insurer.
3. The Telmed / HMO Plan Rule: If you enrolled in an alternative insurance model (Telmed or HMO/Hausarzt to save on monthly premiums), remember to call your insurer’s medical triage hotline before walking in (or within 24 hours of an emergency visit) so your claim is not penalized.

5. ESSENTIAL EMERGENCY NUMBERS TO SAVE ON YOUR PHONE

• 144 (Ambulance / Urgences Vitales): For life-threatening emergencies requiring an ambulance and paramedics.
• 0800 116 117 (Centrale Santé Genève - CeSaGe): Free 24/7 official cantonal triage line in Geneva to evaluate symptoms and direct you to the nearest open clinic before travelling.
• 0848 133 133 (Médecin de Garde – Geneva & Vaud): Official 24/7 on-call doctor dispatch service for home visits or after-hours medical advice.
• 145 (Tox Info Suisse): 24/7 free national helpline for poisoning or toxic ingestions.
• 1414 (Rega Air Rescue): Helicopter emergency rescue for alpine, skiing, and wilderness emergencies.
