The Geneva Amateur Operatic Society (GAOS) will stage their first performance of the musical Cabaret this spring at the Casino Théâtre in Geneva.

Based on the original book by Christopher Isherwood, with music by John Kander and lyrics by Fred Ebb, Cabaret is set in Berlin in 1931 when the Nazis are rising to power.

The aspiring American writer, Cliff Bradshaw, arrives in the city on New Year’s Eve to write the Great-Novel-That-Will-Make-Him-Rich-and-Famous, but he doesn’t seem to be able to get beyond the first paragraph.

In the seedy Kit Kat Klub he meets the crazy young English singer, Sally Bowles, and his life is turned upside when she moves in with him. Their carefree idyll is soon destroyed by a city beset with decadence, despair and discrimination. Overseeing the action is the Master of Ceremonies at the Kit Kat Klub whose irreverent songs punctuate the show and provide a political commentary on what is happening to the Fatherland.  But is this not the material for a good book?

The show contains several well-known numbers including amongst others "Money", "Mein Herr” and “Life is a Cabaret”. These will be performed by a talented cast of local amateur singers, many of whom you will recognize from previous GAOS performances.
