International schools in the Vaud region are now becoming more accessible to students through the launch of scholarship programs, which enable children, whose parents couldn’t normally afford the school fees, to apply for places at their school.

La Côte International School
La Côte International School is the most recent school to introduce their new scholarship initiative for the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP).   Announced by the school’s newly appointed principal, Ms Wendy Ellis, the initiative will award one full or two 50% scholarships starting in the 2104/2105 academic year.  The scholarship program is open to external students aged 15-16 and is worth over 30,000 CHF in total.

Ms Ellis told knowitall.ch, “I am truly delighted that we are able to offer this opportunity to students and am looking forward to the successful students being able to take full advantage of this program at our new, purpose-built premises, due to open in Aubonne, in September 2014.”

More details about the scholarship program, entry requirements and application process can be found on the school’s website by clicking here.  The scholarships will be awarded on a competitive basis and completed applications should be submitted by 27 May, 2014 to This email address is being protected from spambots. GEMS World Academy - Etoy
Families with younger students should take a look at the scholarship program being offered at the GEMS World Academy, which opened last September in Etoy. Open to both new and existing students, the program is generally targeted at children aged between 11 and 14, i.e. children in their Middle Years Programme, but this will extend next year to age 15, with the opening of a new grade 10 class. The school will, however, consider applications from younger children in their Primary Years Programme.

According to the selection criteria, the scholarships are offered to students who can demonstrate an exceptional talent in either the arts, music, academic subjects or sport. Successful candidates can expect financial support of 25 – 100% of the school’s annual fees.  More information on the program can be found on the school’s website here.

Founding Head of School, Audrey Peverelli, remarked, “The aim of our scholarship program is to encourage and reward exceptionally talented children.   There is currently no limit to the number of scholarships provided. Applications can be made at the same time as applying for a place at the school, or at any moment during the school year.”

International School of Lausanne
The International School of Lausanne strongly encourages applications from overseas students for their scholarship program, which provides two full scholarship places in the IB Diploma Programme for exceptional students. The scholarship is valid for two academic years and covers all costs including academic-related fees and housing with a host family.  The deadline for applications for the 2014-2015 academic year has unfortunately now passed. More details for future applications can be found on the school website here.

Integral to ISL's mission and aims is a desire to enrich the diversity of its student body in terms of perspectives, history, socio-economic experience, and cultural background, so the school is unlikely to consider applications from students who are currently receiving an international education. Indeed, there are currently two Tanzanian students in the first year of the IB Diploma Programme, who are doing very well on the scholarship program. Outlining the program to knowitall.ch, school principal, Lyn Cheetham, said, “The idea behind our scholarships is to create educational opportunities for young people who would not otherwise have access to an international education. We expect our highly motivated scholarship students to act as positive role models for other students, with the idea that motivation can breed motivation!”

ISL is currently undergoing a major expansion project, which will lead to the addition of new classes in all years by August 2015, as well as an improvement in facilities and more opportunities within the current educational program.  Enrolment for the 2014-2015 school year is now open for new classes created in their Early Childhood Centre and Primary School, from Reception to Year 6.
