A special event will be held this Thursday, 1 November 2012,  to help parents in the region consider the various options available to them for senior school education.

Hosted by Geneva English School at their premises in Genthod, Geneva, the new “11+ Education Schools’ Exhibition” will feature representatives from local English-speaking international schools, as well as French-speaking schools offering bilingual or English programs. The event will be open to all parents in the region, regardless of whether they have children at Geneva English school or not.

Headmaster Stephen Baird told knowitall.ch, “We are hoping this event will become an annual occasion for all parents in the area who are considering an international education for their children with a strong English bias.  By talking to representatives from local schools in the region, they should be able to compare the various options on offer and make a shortlist of preferred schools based on the information provided at the event.”

Know-it-all passport®'s Education Guide Switzerland is now on sale! The above photo taken at Chavannes Centre Manor shows the 2 books beautifully displayed. Education Guide Switzerland (EGS) is on sale for Fr. 30.-/copy and Know-it-all passport® is shown here for Fr. 38.-/copy.

For over a decade the popular guidebook, Know-it-all passport®, has had a welcome home within the international and local residents of Geneva, Vaud, and neighboring France, and has grown to an astounding 750+ pages for its 8th edition, released August 2012.

The editor behind this series of guidebooks, Lisa Cirieco-Ohlman, had been thinking about publishing other books under the same brand for some time but was waiting for just the right opportunity. This came about in 2011 when Denise Nickerson approached Lisa suggesting a separate book as a guide to schools, exclusively those that present courses in the English language. Both Lisa and Denise have given talks to curious parents in the area and the recurring question and answer sessions often turned to schooling. They both felt this was the right time and place to create Education Guide Switzerland.

Learn “French by living” and practise the language in real life situations

Successful integration into Swiss life is about more than learning French.  It’s about understanding new administrative and legal requirements as well as daily living needs such as making doctors appointments and applying for schools.  A new company called NextoYou has taken this notion to heart to ensure that newcomers make the smooth transition into their new environment.

Run by Geneva-born Irène Jarisch, NextoYou believes in integrating the learning of French with real life situations, through a “learning by living” approach.  So, instead of you going to a classroom, NextoYou comes to you, wherever you need to be, to help you with your most pressing needs – in action, be it with a business or private client.  Irene developed her method after having worked for 6 years as a relocation consultant in Lausanne.  She understands only too well the challenges faced by newcomers arriving in Switzerland!

Sign up now to receive 10% discount on their first CELTA course running in July

A new training center for language teachers has recently opened in Lausanne, offering Cambridge-accredited CELTA courses for those wishing to gain an internationally recognised initial teaching qualification in English Language Teaching (TESOL).  The center will be based at the well-established SL&C language learning center in Lausanne – one of four centers in Switzerland operated by this innovative Swiss language school.

To kick off the first of its new courses, which will run in July, the center is extending its recently expired early bird discount to all knowitall.ch clients who sign up for the course before the end of June. Just mention this article, and the date it was published on our site, to receive your discount.

As a basic requirement for those embarking on a career in English Language Teaching, the CELTA course is a practical, classroom-based course giving a good foundation in basic teaching techniques – classroom management, lesson planning, error correction, language analysis and use of resources. Input sessions, which are led by the course tutors, focus on teaching methodology and language awareness. This input is put to practical use in the preparation of lesson plans and teaching practice.
