The Maison Rousseau & Littérature is situated in Geneva's old town (near the Café de l’Hôtel de Ville).

On the first floor, there is a path telling the tremendous works of the famous philosopher born there in 1712.

This path is not chronological, but thematic and displays his thoughts. They set the basis of so many things which are obvious today, but triggered scandals at the time. They positively influence our lives until today.

Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Citizen of Geneva (1712–1778), was, in the century of enlightenment, one of Europe's greatest philosophers. Today, we live largely in the world he envisioned: democracy, equal rights, education. Kant called him “the Newton of the moral world”, Claparède named him the “Copernicus of pedagogy”, Pestalozzi claimed to be a pupil of Rousseau.

And yet, at the time, his books were burned in an auto-da-fé!

The house where Rousseau was born in Geneva has a themed exhibition dedicated to his work on the first floor. It can be visited alone. But on every first Sunday of the month, there is a free commented tour in English at 11h30 and in French at 14h00. This is a unique opportunity to familiarise yourself with the extraordinary work of this man of the Enlightenment.

The path is self-explanatory, you can go there on your own, paying a small entrance fee.

But some people like to be told the stories. For this, you can hire a guide or simply come to one of the free commented tours:

  • Free commented tours in English every first Sunday of the month at 11h30.
  • Free commented tours in French every first Sunday of the month at 14h.

Here are the links to the next dates for the English tours:
