BPW LAKE GENEVA: GIRLS DON'T REALLY FLY PLANES, DO THEY?
Tuesday 08 October 2019

Dear Guest,

We hope to see you at our next event on October 8 and if you are 35 years or under, you will benefit from the members rate of 55 CHF.

Event topic: Girls don’t really fly planes, do they?

That’s what our speaker Jane Hoskisson (Director Learning & Development at IATA) was told as a girl when she said she wanted to fly a plane. As Jane told us "Given that the average number of women who are pilots is around 5.4%, clearly I was not the only one whose expectations were managed in that way. My eclectic career took me to some other exciting places but more recently I ended up working in an industry where I had originally wanted to begin! Aviation is a fabulously exciting industry, but it is still very male dominated not just in the cockpit, but in the boardrooms too."

Aviation is an industry that connects the world – a diverse and culturally rich world, so it is the right thing to do to make sure the industry is reflective of that diversity. Jane tells us that there is a lot to do, but they have a plan to start changing things. Jane's presentation will explore what they are trying to do within the industry to move the poor representation within IATA and across the industry. We are very much looking forwards to hearing more from Jane and are so delighted she is joining us.

The red thread throughout Jane’s career seems to be working in traditionally male dominated traditional industries. Since graduation she’s worked in Tobacco, Oil, Pharma, and now Aviation. All of them have challenges around sustainability and diversity, and as a protagonist for both, has always felt it is better to be on the inside driving change. Jane started as a business analyst working on various organizational projects, but it was always the change and people aspects that inspired her the most. After completing her MBA, she remembers being told by her Professor, ‘you will end up in HR, but don’t get there too fast – get as much business experience as you can.’ He was right, and her career has led her into Organizational Transformation, Procurement, and (most left field) a two-year stint in audit building a program of audits to look at the ‘people factor’. That led to her Masters in HR, and she has spent the last 10 years in HR, Learning, Development, Talent, and Engagement with a simple vision – to inspire people to succeed.
