monikaA new tennis school will open soon near Lausanne, aimed at children aged between 4 and 14 years old.

Called My Way Tennis, the school will be headed up by Monika Maj, a former Swiss junior singles champion who played regularly with Martina Hingis, and represented Switzerland at many international junior tournaments.

The first course of lessons will run from 2nd May until 3rd July and will cover mini tennis (ages 4-6) and Junior tennis (ages 7-14).  A Summer school is also planned for later in the year.

Originally from Poland, but having lived in Switzerland for 30 years, Monika is passionate about tennis, which she started playing at the young age of 6.  With her natural ability for the sport, she received the first of her three junior championship titles at the age of 12.

However, at the age of 15, she retired from competitive sport due to the high pressure of intense training and decided to continue with her educational studies.  Having passed her maturity exams and started working at Reuters in Geneva, she soon found the lure of tennis too great and returned to the courts, training with Swiss Tennis to become a coach.

After teaching tennis for many years in Geneva, and marrying a British ex-pat living in Lutry (where she lives currently with her 8 month old son), Monika has now decided the best way to combine her passion for tennis with her family life is to set up a school in Lutry!  Her new classes will be held on a court in the heart of Lutry old village, on the corner of Rue Friporte and Rue de Vevey.

Commenting on the new school, Monika says, “Whilst I am keen to pass on my knowledge of tennis at competition level, I believe it is essential to maintain a sense of enjoyment in the sport at all times.  Children who join my classes can be sure of having lots of fun, as well as the opportunity to progress to higher levels of competitive tennis should they wish it.”

Our chapter on Chocolate! in Know-it-all passport 2011/2012 can be found on pages 199-206.

All Swiss chocolate is not the same, as we’re sure you have already discovered!

Commercial chocolate is good, but the hand-crafted stuff is better! Tempt your taste-buds with these small family-run businesses. You will usually be surprised at how different they are and how they will make chocolate-eating a whole new experience! Some of these places are also tea-rooms and serve their own specialty of homemade hot chocolate; you literally need a spoon to eat it!

It is fun to peer through the windows of these shops as the holiday themes make their appearance. Apart from the obvious: Christmas, Easter, Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, there are cute themes such as the Car Show in March, Poisson d’Avril (see page 210), chestnuts in September, and the Marmite de l’Escalade (see page 203). As demands are high in the chocolate-giving seasons, make sure to order in advance.

This beautiful Swiss town is built on a cliff hugging the river, La Sarine, and is a city to discover without further delay!

Because of it’s location, access to the city center is possible via one of the numerous bridges scattered on all sides. Architecturally interesting by themselves, you might like to park your car and walk across some. From the old town we drove across the Zähringen Bridge, built in 1924 that replaced a suspended bridge (1834), and is now 165-meters long. I noticed that we were on the top “deck” as when we circled back I saw the lower “deck” below. It reminded me of the Bay Bridge between Oakland and San Francisco!

The Cité du Temps in Geneva will be transformed into an artists' studio with a difference, and will contain huge canvasses using a rainbow of coloring materials.  Inhouse street painting will be on offer, where participants of all ages will be able to create their own masterpieces or add a personal touch to an existing canvas.  Instant fame is also guaranteed - unlike other artists' studios, this one doubles as an evolving exhibition.

Since we’re still in the heart of Winter, we couldn’t resist choosing another ski resort for this month’s Location of the Month.  However, if you’re not a keen skier, this resort still has plenty to keep you busy!

Situated just beyond Grenoble in France, about 2 and a half hours drive from Geneva, Alpe D’Huez is situated on the  sunny, south-facing slopes of the Grandes Rousses massif, which can enjoy up to 7.5 hours of sun in December and 11 hours of sun in April – in fact an average of 300 sunny days per year.  On one of those fine days, apparently you can see a fifth of France from the top of Pic Blanc (3300m)!
