gesmainphotoGeneva English School (GES) is embarking on an exciting new development, designed to move the school forward and build on the high quality of learning opportunities already provided.  This will mean new and improved facilities and the creation of more primary places.

The school, which is situated in magnificent grounds overlooking Lake Geneva and Mont Blanc, will open three new classes in September for Reception, Year 1 and Year 3 students.  The new classes represent the first stage in a carefully planned expansion programme, which will see the school move to parallel classes running in all year groups by 2013.

With a strong reputation for high academic standards based on the English curriculum, the school has spent many years consulting with parents to consider the various options that would allow it to expand.  The construction of a new building, including new classrooms and additional multi-purpose spaces, was deemed to be the best option that would allow GES to offer two classes per year group as well as develop its expressive arts programme and extra-curricular activities, without comprising the existing high standards of teaching already on offer.

Headmaster, Stephen Baird, who joined the school in January 2010, is keen to point out that Geneva English School will still remain a small school, with a friendly and respectful community where pupils are “known” individuals and develop a strong social confidence.  He adds,

“Since I joined last year, I have identified a number of key areas for development.  However, there are many areas of the school which should and will remain the same.  GES will continue to admit only those pupils who can demonstrate an appropriate fluency in the English language, and thereby access our curriculum effectively.  We will maintain our strong emphasis on teaching French, with classes adapted to children’s proficiency in each year.”

He continues, “We will take advantage of the extra classroom space, to reduce the number of children in each class, something that is considered very important by teachers and parents alike.  As each new class is doubled up, we will reduce the numbers in each class to 22, apart from the reception class that will reduce to 20.  The classes will remain mixed ability and each will include both new and current pupils.”

ges3Three new teachers have recently been appointed from the UK to head up the new classes, and advertisements will be posted after the Easter break to fill assistant positions in each class.  Teaching roles within the French department have also been expanded to accommodate the extra French teaching required.

Building work should start before the Summer holidays begin and should be completed during the first half of 2012.  A few temporary classrooms will be necessary until the building work is finished.

Stephen concludes, “Geneva English School was founded in 1961 so we will start to celebrate our 50th anniversary in September 2011.  What better way to mark this occasion than embarking on a development programme that will carry the school through another 50 years, towards an exciting and positive future! In our 50th year we will enhance the learning experience of all children at GES, ensuring not only that our reputation is earned for today but that we remain in the forefront of educational excellence in the Geneva area.”
