tracey workshops jan16 17b

Know-it-all passport® presents workshops for:

Raising Multilingual Children: Foreign Language Acquisition and Children

by world-renowned specialist in education and neuroscience, Tracey Tokuhama-Espinosa, Ph.D. www.traceytokuhama.com/about-tracey

Tracey is half Japanese-American, half Irish-Native American and is married to an Ecuadorian. Her 3 children aged 20, 22 and 24 speak fluent English, Spanish and German and some French.

Tracey Tokuhama-Espinosa, author of “Raising Multilingual Children” and 5 other books on the brain and learning, is visiting Switzerland to present her dynamic workshops.

There are Ten Key Factors which influence every student’s success with new languages:

  • Timing
  • Aptitude
  • Motivation
  • Strategy
  • Consistency
  • Opportunity
  • Language Typology
  • Siblings
  • Gender
  • Hand-use

Each person will combine these “ingredients” together in their own unique “recipe” for learning. This workshop will familiarize teachers and parents with the factors and suggest tools for enhancing those which are shaped in the school context.

Tracey will explain how children learn languages and answer your questions. For example:

  • Is it ok to have 2, 3, 4 languages at the same time or is it better for children to learn languages consecutively?
  • When should your children learn multiliteracy skills?
  • Who should speak what in order to maximize the best language skills?
  • Should you learn a foreign language alongside your children?
  • Raising your child multilingually has worked so far, but now your child is growing up and you have different questions about identity, literacy, strategy, etc.
  • Come with your own questions and be prepared to share your own concerns about the best way to raise multilingual children.

Comments from previous years' workshops:

"For me the workshop was really enjoyable and highly interesting; I could have spent many more hours learning about and discussing the topic. Even the short workshop was useful and helped me put more structure in my thoughts about raising multilingual children. Hope to participate again." —Sascha

"I would like to commend you and Tracey for a truly wonderful seminar. Thank you for organizing this. The information we all received on Wednesday has proven to be so useful and was delivered in such a fun and jovial way that it would be forever remembered. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU! And I'm completely with you about not being able to recall word for word what Tracey says. She cited examples that made everything so clear and I'd love to stop, rewind and play her again and again.;-) She's amazing! Thank you again for such a wonderful workshop!" —Kecia

"Thank you very much for making this excellent workshop available! I really enjoyed it and got a lot out of it. I was about to give up on speaking Italian with my daughter, but got my second wind now." —Maria

"Many thanks for introducing Tracey the other night. She is phenomenal! The volume of research she shared on raising multilingual kids and the energy with which she conducted the evening was brilliantly impressive." —Purmina

"Our private meeting with Tracey met all our expectations—actually exceeded them. She's got so much knowledge on the topic and is up-to-date with the latest research and findings. It had been reassuring and with great confidence that we follow her guidance. There's no other way I would have done this and I am so happy that I contacted her after reading her book, Raising Multilingual Children.
I especially appreciated that she fueled our need for knowledge by sending presentations and articles. I also liked her sensitivity in terms of helping us get the most of our call by sending these in advance and asking to prep. I think the meeting was well-spent money.
I will definitely recommend Tracey to every parent in need for guidance." —Roxana G.
